The Pantaloons are an English touring theatre company specialising in open-air productions of the plays of William Shakespeare. Their work draws from a wide variety of popular theatre traditions, and is often performed for free in public spaces.
The organisation were formed as group of students at the University of Kent in 2007 and have been a professional company since 2011.
Having worked with the company for 8 years producing a series of marketing materials including outdoor banners and brochures, the company have embraced social media.
The group's founder Mark Hayward said; "Social media is an incredibly useful tool but for open-air performances nothing beats having a big banner at the venue for all visitors to see."
The Pantaloons regularly hold open workshops to look for new performers.
"A lot of companies in the industry have an odd way of recruiting; they seem to prefer putting potential recruits on edge and stack the odds against them actually performing well. We do things differently; we put people at their ease, encourage collaboration, give them a chance to actually show us what they can do at their best."
The organisation has grown over the years.
Mark added; "In our first years we performed just two weeks of shows in Canterbury. Now we mount between three and six different productions a year with each production touring anywhere from one month to three months across the length and breadth of the UK. We’re one of the most prolific touring companies in the country and we’re not entirely sure how that happened! Suffice to say we’ve got a long way to go until we’re as well known as we want to be but we’re always making steps forward."
At present the group produce between three and six productions a year and these each tour for between one month to three months. They perform Shakespeare and literary adaptations as well as the occasional murder mystery or horror experience.
